Cloud forest, mountain and jungle lodges
We have listed a range of lodges below, arranged by geographic situation -cloud forest lodges, mountain refuges for those climbing the great volcanoes, and jungle lodges in the Oriente. We start though with a couple not far from Quito.
 
Quito
Hosteria San Jorge -ecological and biological reserve in the foothills near Quito.
Ecolodge San Jorge -a traditional 18th Century Ecuadorian farm with all the comforts of modern life. Close to all the tourist and commercial centers of Quito, the country inn is also located far enough away from the noisy metropolis to provide guests with peace and tranquility.

Mindo and the Chocó Bioregion

The Chocó is a zone of wet forest, between the Andes mountains and the Pacific coast of western Ecuador and Colombia. It is home to an incredible diversity of plants and animals, many of which are unique, and there are more endemic birds here than anywhere else in the New World. Much of the original lowland Chocó forest has gone, but you can stay in some beautiful highland lodges, particularly around Mindo.

Carmelo de Mindo -an Ecuadorian-run lodge, nested in the beginning of the cloud forest at Mindo.
Hosteria Bellavista (pictured) -lodge less than two hours from Quito offering a range of nature tours in a private reserve of 1500 acres in the cloud forest.
El Monte -stay in beautiful two-story handmade A-frame cabins with river views at Mindo.   
Maquipucuna, Chocó Bioregion/Cloud Forest, Ecotourism Centre in a small but modern lodge at Mindo just 50 miles northwest of Quito. The open-air design allows intimate contact with nature and the soothing sounds of the rushing river -observe exotic species of birds, moths and butterflies, and flowers in bloom such as orchids and bromeliads.
Mindo Garden -a mystical ecological lodge at 1100m above sea level. in its own private reserve of over 700 acres, some 90km from Quito.
Bosque Nublado Santa Lucia -a community-based conservation organization dedicated to the principles of ecological sustainability and community development, the members of Santa Lucía welcome visitors as part of a developing ecotourism enterprise. Visitors to the Ecolodge enjoy comfortable accommodations with panoramic vistas of the surrounding cloud forests, as well as birding, hikes to mountain waterfalls, and other activities.  
Pachijal Reserve -offer a small lodge accomodating up to 18 people in the ecological reserve; where they can of birding and wildlife tours in the area of Yumbos' Culuncos.
Septimo Paraiso -Hosteria located near Mindo, one and a half hours from Qucto, with 22 luxurious rooms with private bathroom, hot water from their own spring with an old elegant country style decoration.
Tapyanda Lodge -located to the north west of Quito, it describes itself as the only lodge in the world designed by birders, owned by birders, and run for birders by birders.
Urcu Puyujunda -cloud forest reserve located northwestern of Pichincha by Nanegalito Mindo road in Las Tolas town.

Mountain Refuges and Lodges
 
Cotopaxi
Black Sheep Inn -ecologically friendly hotel high in the Andes four to five hours from Quito and three hours off the Pan-American Highway on spectacular winding roads. A great base for day hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, acclimating and exploring indigenous markets.
Hotel Cuello de Luna -Albergue de Montana located on the foothills of Cotopaxi Volcano and the Iliniza Mountains right on the Quilotoa Loop.
Hosteria San Mateo -open fire, straw roof, beautiful gardens and homemade organic food a few minutes from Cotopaxi National park.
Quilotoa Crater Lake Lodge -'first class' lodge and restaurant, just 200m from the water filled caldera of the Quilotoa volcano, about three hours from Quito. Also has a camping area for budget travellers. Phone (593-2) 2238 665 in Quito / (593-9) 7175 780 in Quilotoa.
Samana Huasi Lodge -from the Quechua for resting place, Samana Huasi is a community-operated lodge situated in the indigenous village of Tigua-Chimbacucho near Latacunga, the birthplace of "Tigua art".
Tierra del Volcán is located in one of the most beautiful areas of Ecuador near the volcano Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world. It is comprised of three traditional haciendas set amidst diverse volcanos surrounding the majestic Cotopaxi, each with its own magic, ecosystem and microclimate. From each hacienda, guests can enjoy horseback riding, hiking, trekking, mountain climbing, fishing, camping, and mountain biking.

Amazonian Region -the Oriente
 
Imagen2 034_1To the east of the Andes, lies the start of a vast area of lush tropical rainforest that stretches across the amazon basin to the Atlantic Ocean. It is a difficult area to traverse and most visitors will stay in one of the jungle lodges, who can arrange transport to where you will be staying. Unless your destination is nearby to one of the few towns (Puyo, Tena, Misahualli, Coca, Macas), then it is likely you will need to travel by motorized dug-out to get there. It can be very wet in this region, so bring appropriate clothing/footwear, and a polythene bag for your camera. When choosing your lodge, one big plus is where they have a tower or other high vantage point -you will see a completely different view of the jungle from up high. More about the Oriente.
 
Sucumbíos
Cayabeno Lodge -thatched cabins in the Cayabeno Reserve in the north east of Ecuador.
La Selva Jungle Lodge -set in Primary Rainforest, a tropical garden of colorful blossoms, billowing ferns and giant trees providing a green sanctuary to rare and exotic wildlife with intriguing insects, unique species of birds and butterflies and magical sceneries.
Tapir Lodge -based in the northeastern Province of Sucumbíos, in the upper Ecuadorian Amazon region, within the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, the Lodge was built in partnership with some family members of the Siona Community.
Napo / Orellana Province
Imagen2 017_1Cabañas San Isidro & BirdEcuador -located in 1300 hectares of the heart of the lush subtropical zone of the eastern Andes near the town of Cosanga, Cabañas San Isidro has a reputation as one of the finest birding and general interest cloud forest lodges in Ecuador.
Casa del Suizo -provides comfortable accommodation, first-class meals and expert guides in order for you to fully enjoy the wonders of the tropical rainforest by the Napo River.
Cotococha Lodge -offers seventeen bungalows built in a traditional style overlooking the River Napo, about half an hour from Tena. They can organise a complete tour from Quito, taking in Papallacta, Baños and Cotopaxi on the return.
Manatee Amazon Explorer -riverboat accommodating 30 guests in comfortable cabins with private bathrooms and running hot water, individual air conditioning, on board laundry service, large dining room, bar and lounge area, panoramic terrace, delicious cuisine and the finest multilingual naturalist guides, plus the highest safety standards, personable service and efficiency.
Misahualli Jungle Lodge -can host up to 100 guests who stay in comfortable suites and cabañas. The lodge is built on a 145-hectare plot of protected primary and secondary rainforest of which, 3 hectares are gardens and green space.

Sacha Lodge -jungle lodge located 50km down the Napo, on a 3200-acre (1300-hectare) private reserve, guests will take their first walk along a raised boardwalk through dense flooded palm forest to Pilchicocha lake.
Sani Lodge -Quechua community ecotourism project perched on an oxbow lake in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle.
Yachana Lodge -located on the banks of the Napo river in over 3000 acres of primary and secondary rainforest near the tiny community of Mondaña - two hours by motorized canoe from Coca.
Yuturi Lodge -15 multiple huts with private bathrooms, made with typical local materials in the Yarina reserve.
Pastaza
Morono Santiago
Kapawi -Kapawi is the largest community-based project ever developed in Ecuador.  Kapawi was created to provide high service in one of the most remote and pristine areas of southeastern Ecuador, away from oil exploitation and other destructive practices. 
Zamora Chinchipe
Cabañas Copalinga -a family run lodge, located 3 km from the Bombuscaro entrance of Podocarpus National Park. The lodge has 8 wooden cabins for a maximum of 18 people and offers excellent birdwatching opportunities.
Loja
Cabañas Rio Yambala -in the foothills of the Podocarpus National Park, the cabins are a great base for hiking, horse trekking, birding or just relaxing.

Cloud Forest at Mindo
For stunning scenery, lush vegetation and a huge variety of fauna, Mindo is conveniently located in the cloud forest not far from Quito. The picture is an old one of James and Maria at the Bellavista Lodge.
